Nice night, go outside to enjoy it; and then it’s ruined by gnats flying around your head. The NHL has it’s own version of gnats, pests that skate around and harass the good players on your team. And one of them is Sean Avery, now of Dallas; who also played with the Rangers and Red Wings. Last year he stood in front of a goalie and held his stick up by his face trying to block his view. A new rule was instituted and Don Cherry ripped him for doing so on Coach’s Corner. Well, Avery has responded; “He really does not know shit about hockey. He knows, like, unnecessary facts about putting Sears catalogs on your shin pads.” Huh? Cherry’s been around hockey longer than Avery’s been alive. So shut up and keep your yappin on the ice.
The Vancouver Canucks named goalie Roberto Luongo captain. This is the first goalie captain in 61 seasons to receive the honour after Bill Durnan served as captain of the Montreal Canadiens in 1947-48. Durnan’s penchant for leaving his crease to talk to officials prompted the league to create a rule that is still in effect today. It prohibits a goaltender from acting as a captain or alternate captain on the ice and wearing a C on his jersey. The NHL remains concerned that allowing a goaltender to perform traditional captain’s duties will give a team unscheduled timeouts. Luongo is not allowed to discuss calls with officials or participate in pre-game face-offs. Oh yeah, the ‘C’ on his jersey; he improvised.
