Injuries start early

It doesn’t take long for players to get hurt. On the Wings, Filppula won’t be ready any earlier than the third exhibition game of the season after a hit by Downey drove him into the boards injuring his thumb.

Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and will miss 4 to 6 weeks. He suffered the injury last spring and an earlier procedure didn’t work as hoped.

San Jose Sharks center Torrey Mitchell broke his leg Sunday crashing into the goal post and will be out at least two months.

And so it goes, I’m sure some more stuff will happen; there’s always the dreaded pulled groin. Nobody explains that one, I wonder if it’s related to the pulled chicken I ate recently.

Update: Lidstrom broke his nose and will miss at least the next 3 games.  Montreal’s Carle was taken off the ice on a stretcher after a clean hit by Kopecky, possible concussion. Pittsburgh’s Gonchar has a dislocated shoulder and is out indefinitely. The Blues Erik Johnson (#1 overall draft pick-06) got his foot caught between the gas and brake pedal on a golf cart, tore his knee up and will miss the season.

  1. On this line, Nick Lidstrom got hit in the face with a puck last night. He has a cut above his eye, thank God it’s not more serious.
