Training camp opens today for the Wings up in Traverse City. Early line indications are Datsyuk, Hossa and Holmstrom. Zetterberg, Hudler and Franzen then Cleary, Filppula and Samuelsson; and Draper, Kopecky and Maltby. Then we have McCarty, Abdelkader, Ritola, Helm, Leino and Downey to create some competition for the remaining spots, with some going back to the minors. Defense is pretty well set with Lidstrom, Rafalski, Stuart, Kronwall, Lilja, Lebda, and then Quincy, Chelios, Meech, Ericsson, Pyett and Kindl trying to make it in the mix. Chelios has been told his role is more of a mentor to the young guys and he won’t play a lot, but will see some action.
Detroit opens at home against Toronto along with a concert by Def Leppard at the Fox Theatre to celebrate NHL Face-off Rocks. Portions of the concert will be shown on Versus and CBC with NHL.com and CBCSports.ca providing live streaming video. Hockey and Rock and Roll, drop the puck and let’s go.
