New coach

The Detroit Red Wings announced the hiring of Brad McCrimmon as a assistant coach today. McCrimmon replaces Todd McLellan who was hired as the coach of the San Jose Sharks in June. McCrimmon joins the Wings’ organization having spent the last four seasons as assistant coach with the Atlanta Thrashers. He also has served as assistant coach for the Calgary Flames and the New York Islanders.  He has over 25 years of NHL experience, including 18 seasons as an NHL defenseman, playing for Detroit from 1990-93. The Wings also resigned assistant coach Paul MacLean to a three-year contract.

The Sundin watch continues as his agent says 6 teams are interested in him but no decision has been made  where he will play. Detroit is not one of the teams, they are close to the cap and have several players to sign yet.

  1. I’ve watched McCrimmon for the past few years (I live in Atlanta). He seems to have a good relationship with the players, and is pretty accessible to the fans.

  2. That’s good, as the players need a go-between them and the head coach. Not all head coaches are approachable with problems the players perceive to exist. An assistant that can do that makes every thing run smoother.
